4.2.1. Identifying the "Communities"

Wastewater recycling operates close to the source of wastewater, so  community co-operation is necessary. It is necessary to work with the client community. They may be a residential neighborhood, office, school, agro-industry, hotel, or combination.

4.2.2. Getting Communities Approval

Community "approval" means formal and informal approvals:

• agreement by municipal and community representatives to the general concept .
  
• agreement by local residents, especially in areas directly affected by the project.
  
• agreement of the landowner to land use
  
• agreement of local laboratories to test water and soil
  
• agreement of local environment authorities
  

4.2.3. Education and Documentation

A photographic summary is helpful for future instruction of community leaders and municipal sanitary engineers. At the end of the project a paper reflecting experiences of the work is desirable. This should be planned from the beginning, to demonstrate replicability to other communities.

Community involvement is essential - 

Photo above  - children show posters they made while learning how wastewater recycling works. The facility is a few hundred meters from their school.  See photo page 7 for overhead view of community and site.

Photo left - Unnoticed but functional: underground biogas digester (concrete manholes lower right) next to community cultural center. Gas is used for cooking in the building. To allow such proximity, community education is required to show that such facilities have no odor or other harmful effects.
