6.8. Wildlife

Wastewater recycling facilities combine agricultural production with biodiversity. They provide habitat for wildlife. Many wild species live on sites including:

  • different bird species
  • insect-controlling reptiles
  • insects which control mosquito populations
  • small rodents
  • wild fish in macrophyte ponds

It is important to see these species as
complimentary to the agricultural production process rather than competing with it. For example, lizards, birds, fish and certain insects all control mosquito populations.

Therefore a key goal of the site operator is to
protect and support wildlife populations on site.
